About Ken Bruland

Ken Bruland opened the Inland Seas School of Kayaking in 1998 as a way to help introduce the public safely to the ever-increasing interest in kayaking. Ken’s interest in sea kayaking began as part of a natural evolution from canoeing, whitewater rafting and whitewater kayaking. He has been an American Canoe Association certified guide since 1992 and has instructed and led trips in Door Co., Wisconsin, the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks in Lake Superior, the Gulf Coast of Florida, Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada and most recently in the Beaver Island archipelago in northern Lake Michigan.

Ken holds degrees in cultural anthropology and Spanish and was an ESL and Spanish teacher until 1998 when he decided to take his teaching skills to the water. He is also an EMT-Paramedic with certifications in-water rescue and Wilderness EMT and is a member of the water rescue team on Beaver Island.
Ken’s outdoor background includes wilderness survival, orienteering and land and water navigation, winter survival, backpacking, and snowshoeing.
Ken’s broad outdoor experience combined with 13 years of teaching experience make him an excellent kayak instructor.
